The 17 best things to do in Marrakech Morocco

Marrakech Morocco, unquestionably one of the world’s most iconic and enticing destinations, hits every single ambitious note expected of it. Africa’s first Capital of Culture is a whirlwind of excitement and energy, serving up a veritable conveyor belt of rooftop restaurants, courtyard mansions (riads, to be precise), and innovative museums, all complemented by the city’s famous flavors and colors.
Marrakech is a Moroccan city that aims for all senses and doesn’t hold back, a ‘exhausted in the best way’ kind of place that enchants from sunrise to long after sunset. To say the least, this isn’t a city for dithering. Marrakech, home to some of the continent’s best museums and markets that make relocating a tempting prospect, must be seen to be believed. The best things to do in Marrakech require all of the senses to be seen, heard, smelt, tasted, and touched.

1. Bahia Palace, Marrakech Morocco

What exactly is it? The slave-turned-vizier Abu ‘Bou’ Ahmed lived in this 150-room palace, which he lavishly decorated. The painted, gilded ceilings, polychrome zellige tiling, and carved stucco retain their intended effect – simply ‘wow.’

Why should I go? Bahia is roughly translated as ‘beautiful,’ and that is not an exaggeration. Get lost in the intricate detailing of the palace’s shaded spaces to escape the heat of the midday sun.

2. Souk Semmarine, Marrakech Morocco

What exactly is it? Marrakech is famous for its souks (markets), the largest of which is Souk Semmarine. This labyrinth offers rugs, leather goods, silverware, and crockery of all shapes and sizes – just try not to get lost.

Why should I go? If you want to have a true Marrakchi experience, engage in some haggling with a local trader. Reduce their starting price and walk away with a one-of-a-kind memento.

3. Jardin Majorelle, Marrakech Morocco

What exactly is it? This botanical garden, designed by French painter Jacques Majorelle, is home to more cacti than you can shake a terrarium at and features a stunning indigo blue art deco house as its centerpiece.

Why should I go? Prepare your phone cameras – Jardin Majorelle is pure Instagram gold. Though there will be some cringe photoshoots, it is impossible to take a bad picture here. Arrive early to avoid being photobombed.

4. Musée Yves Saint Laurent, Marrakech Morocco

What exactly is it? The French designer was so taken with Marrakech that he purchased Jardin Majorelle in 1980. The Musée Yves Saint Laurent, which opened next to the gardens in 2017, is dedicated to Yves’ couture legacy and has a permanent display of hundreds of garments spanning his 40-year career.

Why should I go? The YSL collection is an incredible body of work that non-fashionistas can appreciate. It is housed in one of the city’s most beautiful buildings, along with a lovely garden café, bookshop, temporary exhibition hall, and auditorium.

5. Musée des Confluences, Marrakech Morocco

What exactly is it? Former governor’s palace and residence of the infamous Thami El Glaoui, Lord of the Atlas. The Musée des Confluences now houses American Patty Birch’s archaeological collection and hosts exhibitions that explore the intersection of eastern and western cultures.

Why should I go? This is probably the most beautiful structure in the medina, with coffered cedar ceilings, geometric tiling, and stucco worked into elaborate floral motifs. Bacha Coffee House, Marrakech’s best coffee shop, serves more than 40 brews in the same building.

6. El Badi Palace, Marrakech Morocco

What exactly is it? The epic ruins of Sultan Ahmed el-once-magnificent Mansour’s palace, set within sunken gardens and surrounded by epic ramparts with crumbling towers that offer panoramic views of the medina.

Why should I go? Although El Badi is a ruin, it provides fascinating insight into the power and wealth of past Moroccan dynasties. The Koutoubia’s minbar (prayer pulpit), crafted by 12th-century Cordoban artisans, is also housed within the ruins.

7. Souk Place des Épices, Marrakech Morocco

What exactly is it? Moroccan cuisine is known for its complex, aromatic flavors. The traditional spice souk, Place des Épices, is where you’ll find merchants selling everything from allspice to ras AL Hanout (a mix of more than a dozen spices).

Why should I go? This open-air souk has a unique atmosphere. Along with spice bags, you can buy colorful basketry or simply sit and watch the show from one of the cafés that surround the square.

8. Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakech Morocco

What exactly is it? The vast open square at the heart of the medina is a Unesco world heritage site and one of Marrakech’s most popular attractions. Snake charmers, street entertainers, and overzealous henna artists can be found at every turn.

Why should I go? Every night, locals and tourists flock to the Jemaa, drawn by the never-ending hoopla and Halqa (street theatre). Grab some food from a barbecue stall, listen to some music, and then head up to a rooftop bar to watch the sunset.

9. The Mellah, Marrakech Morocco

What exactly is it? Marrakech’s Jewish quarter, which has undergone extensive renovations. Visit the Al Azama synagogue and the breathtaking Miara cemetery.

Why should I go? Tours provide insight into an intriguing period in Marrakech’s (and Morocco’s) history. Other than Jewish heritage groups, this area of the city is rarely visited by tourists – get down there before everyone else does.

10. Gueliz, Marrakech Morocco

What exactly is it? Gueliz, the so-called ‘New Town’ of the 1930s, is located a short distance west of the medina. There are plenty of European-style shopping malls and small homeware boutiques, as well as a great selection of bars and restaurants for a post-retail therapy pit stop.

Why should I go? Gueliz is Marrakech’s modern face, and it is here that you will find the city’s best restaurants. Its relaxed atmosphere is a welcome respite from the ferocity of the medina.
